Aromatherapy is a term used to
define the use of essential oils to affect a person’s
health or mental state. Essential oils are volatile
liquids extracted from certain plants, flowers, grasses,
roots and trees. These oils have been used for thousands
of years in various ways. For example, a story in the
Bible tells of an anointing oil made of myrrh, cinnamon,
calamus, cassia and olive oil. This oil would have great
antibiotic properties as cinnamon is a powerful
antiviral and antibacterial as well as antifungal. Myrrh
is an antiseptic and stimulates cellular growth. Modern
day research shows that there are oils that are
antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, sedative,
antirheumatic and analgesic, just to name a few. In
addition, essential oils enter and leave the body very
efficiently. They do not stay in the body and do not
leave toxic residues behind. The most effective route in
administering essential oils is |
topically or aromatically. These
oils are fat soluble so are readily absorbed through the skin.
Aromatically, these small molecules are transported directly to
the brain. The sense of smell is the only sense that has a
direct route to the brain with 800,000 receptors. Aromas can
improve performance, memory and alertness as well as relax or
change your mood. Essential oils are very powerful and may
stimulate recalled
|
memories or allergic reactions. Also if you are
pregnant, certain oils should be avoided due to their
affects on the body. Please notify your therapist whether you are pregnant or have any sensitivities before your session begins. Otherwise enjoy the scents as well as the benefits. |
Lavender (Lavandula
angustifolia)
In 1920, French Chemist René Maurice Gattefossé
discovered the healing properties of Lavender. In a
lab accident, he caught his arm on fire. In
desperation, he flung his arm in the nearest source of
liquid. It turned out that it was a vat of lavender
oil. His arm healed quickly and without a scar.
Lavender is considered a universal oil. It is
traditionally known to balance the body, wherever there is
need. It is a natural antibiotic,
antiseptic, antidepressant, sedative and detoxifier.
It helps stimulate cell regeneration and the immune system.
It promotes health, love, peace and a general sense of
wellbeing. |
